The ARI (Artist Run Initiative(like RAYGUN))

So. I’m reading this article in the NAVA Quarterly, 11.3 called COLLECTIVITY… an article by Brianna Munting – the following is paraphrased… but there are some awesome bits..

-She talks about the future modelling of ARI’s focussing on hybridity and exchange, radicality and experimentation. Being a place for studios and residencies, publications in hard copy or online…

-The idea of the ARI becomes more important than the actual work

-spaces that become the commons and collectives that reject the social, economic, ideological and physical structures

-ARI’s are the largest sector and the most accessible.

-spaces for realisation, for action and for critical thinking

-ARI’s are the spaces that have the capacity for engaging with ideas of difference, producing different models, different relationships, different power balances, and different audiences.

-‘they are not restricted by frameworks, bureaucracy or conditions, not subject to the breadth or art criticism, do not necessarily have to operate to all compliance standards and can generate an openness of access for audiences, artists and community with the freedom to make mistakes.’

-‘the difining factor that should not be forgotten is that it is the artists who make these spaces, who inhabit them, give them life and energy.’

-‘Artists are now entrepreneurs; they wear many hats, perform many roles; yet still remain on the periphery compartmentalized into categories.’

-spaces run by artists are important because they are ‘continually pressing audiences with ideas and questions that can be regarded as difficult. They are spaces for inquiry and for the collective.’

loving it!
